Circular Walks And Gorges In East Crete

This book is aimed at helping discover a little more of the “off beat” Crete:
To give others the chance to walk the ancient paths and by-ways, some said to have been used by the Minoans; To see places hidden away from the well known areas.

To discover the mountains in spring time carpeted in a wide variety of wild flowers, including many different types of orchids; the fields of almond trees in blossom; the different varieties of herbs growing out of the rocks at the side of the paths.
Apart from the plants there are several ruins to see, old settlements with the remains of ovens, churches and monasteries each depicting a part of Crete’s turbulent history. Interesting sights include waterways, old aqueducts, cisterns and wells dating from Venetian times to the present day.
Included in the book are 20 circular walks, varying in length between 1 ½ to 4 hours plus 10 gorges all in the Lassithi area. Five of these are in the Elounda area. Written instructions are accompanied by a sketch map, drawings and coloured photographs.

We, the authors are both English and have lived in Crete for more years than we care to remember. Initially when we started walking and exploring the surrounding countryside we jotted down notes on routes and paths we found to jog our own memories.

We both have apartments in the Agios Nikolaos area, and have been involved in tourism since first coming to Crete. Clients often asked us if we knew of places to walk and things to see and so we typed up a few routes, which proved very popular. From there progressed the idea of the book and the rest is history.
This, the second edition of the book has been published by the Municipal Cultural Organization of Agios Nikolaos in spring 2009. It is also now available in Greek.
